Air mattress repair is easier than you think with the Seam Grip WP Repair Kit. Leaking air mattresses and sleeping pads can be repaired using the kit. Included in each kit is a ¼ oz. tube of Seam Grip WP repair adhesive, 2 Tenacious Tape repair patches, an application brush and a repair guide.

You will not always use all of the items in the kit, however. For instance, you will only use the Seam Grip WP repair adhesive for home repairs or repairs to larger air mattresses and blow-up beds. Seam Grip WP is permanent, flexible and waterproof. It will typically outlast the material you are applying it to. Typically, you will only use the Tenacious Tape repair patches for a field repair and you will use them in conjunction with the Seam Grip WP adhesive.

If you are making the repair at home, we recommend the following:

HOME REPAIR

STEP 1: Locate the leak. Fill up the air mattress or sleeping pad with air. Spray water on a small section of the mattress or mat.

STEP 2: Look for any bubbles. If you see bubbles rising from the sleeping pad or air mat after applying the water, dry this area and mark it with a pen or marker.

STEP 3: Once you have identified the leaks, deflate the sleeping pad or air mattress.

STEP 4: Clean the repair area with isopropyl alcohol to remove any dirt or body oils which may prevent a good bond. *Optional: You can roughen the surface with sandpaper to help with bonding strength.

STEP 5: Once clean and dry apply a thin layer of Seam Grip over the leak (extending at least ½’’ in all directions of the rip, tear or hole) and allow to dry flat and untouched for 12 hours.

SPECIAL NOTES

• You do not need to use the Tenacious Tape repair patches for a home repair. The Seam Grip adhesive achieves an aggressive bond onto the fabric and will typically outlast the life of the air mattress or sleeping pad. The Tenacious Tape patch is only necessary for a field repair (see below).
• Inflatable mattresses must be repaired with a permanent adhesive like Seam Grip WP or Aquasure FD
• You must allow the adhesive to fully cure before attempting to blow the mattress up
• Patches alone are not strong enough to hold back the amount of PSI associated with inflatable mattresses

IN-FIELD REPAIR

STEP 1: Locate the leak. If you have a water bottle in the field, and more importantly, water to spare, sprinkle some on a small section of the mattress or mat.

STEP 2: Look for any bubbles. If you see bubbles rising from the sleeping pad or mat after applying the water, note this area.

STEP 3: Once you have identified the leaks, deflate the sleeping pad or air mat.

STEP 4: Clean the repair area the best you can to remove any dirt or body oils which may prevent a good bond. Isopropyl alcohol is ideal, so if you have any alcohol pads in your first aid kit that you can spare, you may want to use them to clean the repair area.

STEP 5: Once clean and dry apply a thin layer of Seam Grip over the leak (extending at least ½’’ in all directions of the rip, tear or hole). Since you are out in the field and most likely do not have the luxury of waiting 12 hours for the adhesive dry, you will need to apply a Tenacious Tape patch over the curing adhesive.

STEP 6: Wait about 1 hour for the Seam Grip to level out and become tacky.

STEP 7: After 1 hour, apply either Tenacious Tape patch (it does not matter which one; we offer a clear PVC patch or a black nylon patch) over the curing adhesive. Make sure the patch adheres directly to the dry sleeping pad or air mattress fabric (NOTE: The patch must extend at least ½’’ beyond the Seam Grip adhesive and bond solidly to the pad fabric). This will allow you to get back on the sleeping pad, so that you can use it immediately as the glue dries.

NOTE: The Tenacious Tape patches will hold up on sleeping pads and Therm-A-Rest mattresses, but we would not recommend placing the patch on a blow-up bed or larger inflatable air mattress. Those items contain a great deal of PSI and you need to wait for the glue to properly cure for 12 hours before attempting to get back on blow-up beds or larger inflatable mattresses (see home repair above). Larger air mattress repair should utilize the home repair method above.
